BAROQUE TAPESTRY-WEAVE CARPET (FRENCH-LILLE OR BEAUVAIS) OR FLEMISH (BRUSSELS), CIRCA 1700
While one cannot say, with certainty, whether this was originally meant as a table or floor carpet, the opinion is that it was more likely meant for the floor, judging by the shadowing effect that presupposes a light source emanating from the upper left. The attribution to either Flemish or French production cannot be further clarified, as there was much traffic in weavers and designs between the major French and Flemish weaving centers at this time. A similar example is in the collections of the J.Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, CA.
