'BESSARABIAN' (RUSSIAN OR THE UKRAINE), 1830
The basic design of this ´Bessarabian´ is taken from textile patterns as is most apparent in the novel striped elements of the border, which imitate the background elements seen in 18th century brocade fabrics. The over-scaled boteh motifs of the field, however, confidentially date this is piece to circa 1830. These tear-drop shapes, mistakenly called “paisley” in the West, can be seen in a few other rare European carpets of the period and are inspired by the designs of Kashmiri shawls that were the au courant fashion accessory throughout Europe during the time.
